Arches National Park

If you leave Moab without exploring Arches National Park, you’re missing out. The iconic views of the sandstone arches that were sculpted by nature and radiate a painterly glow draw visitors from across the country and around the globe. The Arches boast more than 2,000 of its signature arches, but that’s far from its only appeal. In fact, this red-rock wonderland houses hundreds of pinnacles that soar into the surrounding sky, giant rocks that are impossibly balanced, and immense rock fins. The stargazing at Arches is unparalleled due to the park’s low light pollution and stellar air quality, and the sunsets are considered some of the most beautiful anywhere.

Arches has hikes for everyone, whether you are looking for a short stroll, such as the Arches Visitor Center Nature Trail – which is only 150 feet and won’t take you more than about 10 minutes – or you’re looking for something far more adventurous. The stunning trails throughout the park are grouped into the categories of easy, moderate, and strenuous. Prime examples of each include:

  • Balanced Rock Viewpoint and Trail offers unique views of a uniquely balanced rock and is a brief and easy .3 miles roundtrip.
  • Courthouse Towers Viewpoint and Trailhead traces the mostly smooth canyon bottom – heading uphill – toward stairs that are cut out of rock and lead to Park Avenue Viewpoint. Roundtrip, this moderate hike is 1.8 miles and takes about an hour.
  • Delicate Arch Trail is deemed strenuous, but it allows you to travel 538 feet up to the park’s most famous arch – crossing open slickrock with no shade as you go. It’s important to note that this trail traverses about 200 yards of narrow, rocky ledge right before Delicate Arch. The roundtrip distance for this one is about three strenuous miles, and it takes about two to three hours.

Canyonlands National Park

The embarrassment of riches that is Moab is not satisfied with just one gem of a national park, which is where Canyonlands National Park comes in. Canyonlands is known the world round for its natural beauty, the sense of wonderment it inspires, its tranquil serenity, and its fabulous hiking trails. This more than 375,000 acres of park is divided into four districts, which are known as Island in the Sky, The Needles, the Maze, and The Rivers. With the majestic Colorado River cutting through it, Canyonlands is beyond gorgeous – no matter where you find yourself.

Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse Point State Park is home to the Dead Horse Point overlook, which is perched 2,000 feet above the Colorado River and skirts Canyonlands National Park. From the overlook parking lot, the overlook is an easy 200 feet away, and it affords some of the most breathtaking views you’ll find in an area that’s chock full of breathtaking views.

The La Sal Mountain Loop

Sometimes a scenic drive is just the thing, and the La Sal Mountain Loop State Scenic Backway is an adventure on wheels. This switchback-laden, 3-hour, 60-mile drive is not suitable for large RVs or trailers, but it does offer pristine views of the La Sal’s alpine ridges, the red rock desert, and Castle Rock’s sandstone pinnacles. This is where you’ll spy those buttes and Mesas that are often featured in westerns and the iconic peaks that often serve as backdrops in pictures of the Delicate Arch. The narrow, winding road is intended for passenger cars only, and because there is nowhere to stop along the way, don’t forget to gas up and stock up on water and snacks before you head out.
