Waypoint to Wild

crystal geyser

Green River bills itself as the waypoint to wild, and it lives up to this claim. In fact, Green River is famous for a lot more than just watermelons and watermelon crawls.

Goblin Valley State Park

This outcropping of five buttes and a valley of eerily shaped rock formations against the backdrop of hauntingly beautiful cliffs that have eroded to perfection shouldn’t be missed. The sunsets, stargazing, and photo ops here are major draws.

Black Dragon Canyon Trail

The Black Dragon Canyon Trail is easily accessible from the highway out of Green River, and it features a brilliant pictograph of what appears to be a flying dragon, which adorns the San Rafael Swell’s eastern cliff line – often called the San Raphael Rough. This stop is rightoff the highway, and it boasts easy trails that yield fabulous views.

Crystal Geyser

Accidentally created during a 1930 drilling operation, this cold-water geyser is powered by carbon dioxide and erupts about every 12 to 16 hours. Signs that she’s likely to blow in the next few hours include a lot of bubbling and basin overflow.

Arches National Park

A day trip from Green River, Arches National Park is world renowned for its staggering beauty. With more than 2,000 naturally sculpted sandstone arches in painterly hues, the Arches are the perfect spot to do all the following:

  • Hike
  • Bike
  • Off-road
  • Picnic
  • Snap endless photos
  • Stargaze
  • Take in a breathtaking sunset or sunrise

Swasey’s Beach

Swasey’s Beach is just outside of Green River, and it is an idyllic location for kicking back and cooling off. The white sand beach, which is shaded by cottonwood trees that line the edge of Book Cliffs, and shallow water make it the perfect spot for families to splash around. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, however, there are kayak-ready rapids upstream.

Monument Hill Sculpture Park

The Monument Hill Sculpture Park features two massive land art pieces by world renowned sculpture Andrew Rogers. The first is called The Ratio, which was commissioned for $145,000 in 2010, and many liken it to a pile of blocks – capped by a gold leaf block – that reflects the intricate ratios found in nature. Another Rogers sculpture, Elements, was added in 2013, and it is composed of four towers – one of which is capped in gold – that are 10 meters high and are said to represent earth, wind, fire, and water.

Ding & Dang Canyons

Ding & Dang Canyons is also part of the Swell, and it affords more experienced hikers – who are comfortable facing some semi-technical scrambling on the rocks – with a great opportunity to enjoy the spectacular beauty these dueling slot canyons have to offer.

Farnsworth Canyon

Farnsworth Canyon has something for everyone, including:

  • A short narrows to traverse
  • A pictograph panel
  • Outsized views
  • Arches
  • An optional opportunity or two to rappel

If you only have time for one canyon, Farnsworth affords you a veritable sample platter.
