Fishlake National Forest
Fishlake National Forest is yet another jewel in the crown of Utah’s abundant natural beauty. Right in the center of the state, this Forest features majestic stands of aspen encircling open mountain meadows that are lush with a diverse community of forbs and grasses and is home to Fish Lake. Fish Lake is the state’s largest natural mountain lake, and it’s a great place for trophy fishing and bird watching – in addition to being a prime wildlife-viewing locale. Be on the lookout for all the following:
- Elk
- Black bears
- Cougars
- Moose
- Deer
- Mountain goats
- Wild turkeys
A highlight of Fishlake National Forest is its 628 miles of motorized trails – in addition to nearly endless miles of hiking paths – along with its world class ice fishing.
We can’t do the Forest justice if we fail to mention Pando, which is believed to be the largest – at almost 13 million pounds – and the densest organism ever found. Pando is the Latin word for I spread, and it is an apt name for this aspen clone that sprang from a single seed and that continues to spread via new shoot systems that its ever-expanding root system sends up. This single organism covers 106 acres and sports 40,000 individual trees. Pando was first identified in the 1970s, but more recently, geneticists have confirmed this natural phenomenon, which has garnered worldwide attention.
